Spring Funding Opportunities

The Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives (HFHL) Institute invites proposals and letters of interest (LOI) for three spring 2019 funding opportunities:

Faculty Research The University Faculty Research Grant Program seeks to fund new, interdisciplinary faculty research teams that include members from at least three distinct disciplines and that produce research that has a high potential for growth and for becoming self-supporting over time. The priority areas for focus are food protection (safety), prevention of obesity and diet-related disease, food policy, and food security. Within these priority areas, of special importance is the integration of agriculture and health sciences. Up to two grants will be awarded this funding cycle. Each grant will be awarded to an interdisciplinary team for a project with a maximum total cost of $150,000. Projects may be up to two years in length.

student washing lettuceThe Graduate and Professional Research Grant Program seeks to fund student research and/or other activities related to broadening interdisciplinary learning in the areas of food, agriculture, and human health. Funds will be distributed through a competitive review process.  The grants to be funded through this program must utilize novel and innovative approaches to answer potentially high impact research questions.  The request should seek to establish cross-disciplinary learning and engagement. For this grant cycle, HFHL plans to award a total of up to $20,000.  Applicants may seek grant funds ranging from $2,000-$10,000.

Community members in meeting.The Community-University Partnership Planning Grant Program is designed to fund the development of authentic community-university partnerships related to food, nutrition, and health. The expected outcome of this award is that teams prepare and submit a grant proposal to one of the major HFHL grant programs or to other equivalent University, government and/or private sources. Up to two planning grants will be awarded to developing partnerships this funding cycle. Awards will range from a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $10,000. It is expected that grant proposals will request $10,000 or less. However, in exceptional circumstances, funding at a higher level may be considered with very strong justification. Funding is eligible for up to one year. 75% of the award will be distributed at the onset of the planning. 25% of the award will be distributed following the successful preparation and submission of the grant proposal.
