Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Institute
Jared Walhowe serves as Assistant Director for the Healthy Foods, Healthy Lives Institute (HFHL). As Assistant Director, Jared assists in overseeing the implementation of HFHL's grant programs, classes and educational programming, the annual Native American Nutrition Conference, our annual academic symposia, the Minnesota Food Charter Network, and more. Jared brings to the Institute nearly a decade of experience in community food systems to the position, including almost 2 years as the Program Coordinator for HFHL and the Minnesota Food Charter Network.
Before joining our team, Jared was the Produce Specialist with The Food Group, where he increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables for over 200 local hunger-relief organizations. In his role, Jared oversaw the Fruits of the City program, the Food Group Farm, Produce Rescue at the Minneapolis Farmers Market, and worked with cities, schools, parks, and congregations to develop publicly accessible gardens and orchards. He built relationships with hundreds of farms, orchards, gardeners, and residential fruit tree owners who regularly donated their extra produce to food shelves and meal programs. Jared's previous roles also include Gleaning Manager at The Minnesota Project as well as managing the operations of the Waite House food shelf in Minneapolis. Jared is a current board member of the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture.
